Scrubs Season1

With the end of Scrubs on the horizon (well at least with the original cast), I thought I would go through my Scrubs box sets and give my thoughts on each season. So lets start with Season 1 then.....

Scrubs revolves around he life of Dr. John "JD" Dorian, (Zach Braff) a medical intern at the Sacred Heart hospital. Along with college friend and roommate Chris Turk (Donald Faison), surgical intern, they arrive for first day and find out that its not as easy as they thought it be. We are introduced to both men's love interests for the show, Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke) , JD's fellow medical intern, and Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes), the head nurse. Along with the new starts we are introduced to their superiors. Dr. Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins), the hot-tempered head of medicine out make it difficult for the new interns, and Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley), an aggressive resident who JD immediately wants to impress. The Janitor (Neil Flynn) who has a vendetta against JD, completes the main cast.

For those of you know me, I strongly dislike Friends, a show many consider the "best" comedy show ever. I find the laughing track very off-putting (not a fan of being told when to laugh), random one-liners that thrown in to get cheap laughs and don't get me started on Phoebe. Scrubs is the complete opposite. The camera angles are better (Scrubs uses single camera shots, most other sitcom uses a four camera shot), it does drama which Friends never did, and the show is carried by its story lines not its jokes. Its shot in an actual hospital, adding to the realism of the show. The dialogue is intelligent and fast-paced, with a bit of slapstick thrown in, and then you have the daydream sequences that bring surreal yet hilarious moments.

However, its the actors that really make this show. Each one proves they are great at comedy but when the time comes to get serious, the emotion displayed is amazing. Zach Braff is brilliant as JD, who at the time was a relative new comer who had to carry the weight of being the lead character in a new comedy show. He would steal the show if not for the efforts of John C. McGinley as Dr. Cox and Neil Flynn as The Janitor. They produce the best lines and comedy moments within the show, not just within the season by the whole series run.

I remember watching the first episode on Sky One back in 2001, and instantly loving it. The video below from the first ever episode, confirmed in my mind that this show was going to special.

If I had to pick the best episode from season 1. it would have to be the 4th "My Old Lady" It showed that Scrubs could do serious as well as funny. JD, Turk and Elliot each have a patient and they have deal with their patent's deaths. Its a brilliant episode which has won awards.

Season 1 is brilliant but it does have its flaws but most are ironed out in the following seasons. The most annoying aspect is the way they ended the JD & Elliot relationship so quickly but apart from that everything is near perfect. Great way to get the ball rolling.
